The Summer of 2011 provided many challenges for the firefighters of the Purchase Fire Department. The following are summaries of the notable incidents during the summer months.
June 18, 1:10 PM - The Westchester County Airport requested a response for a reported plane crash off the property. Numerous police, fire, and EMS agencies responded to the crash, located in the woods behind the MBIA building at 113 King Street in Armonk. Four victims were found in the small propeller aircraft. Car 2411, Car 2412, Engine 238, Engine 240, Rescue 30, and Utility 10 were on scene and assisted for the duration of the incident in various rolls. Purchase units cleared the incident at 7:30 PM.
July 17, 12:40 AM - The Harrison Fire Department operated at a structure fire at 114 Fremont Street. Car 2411 and Engine 240 stood by in their quarters with Car 2393 and Tower Ladder 2 from the Port Chester Fire Department. Shortly after relocating, Engine 240 was requested to the scene for additional personnel. Units assisted in extinguishment and overhaul of the three story multiple dwelling. Purchase units cleared at 3:30 AM.
July 19, 8:50 AM - Car 2411, Car 2412, Engine 240, and Rescue 30 operated with the West Harrison Fire Department on Interstate 684 southbound at the split to Interstate 287 for a vehicle that drove down an embankment. Two patients, including an adult and a child, were trapped in the vehicle. Crews stabilized the vehicle and removed the patients within minutes. Units cleared at 10:00 AM.
August 1, 7:30 PM - The Armonk Fire Department was dispatched to a serious motor vehicle accident with ejection on Interstate 684 southbound at mile marker 5.7. The Incident Commander reported that a woman was struck by a vehicle and thrown off the elevated roadway into the marsh twenty feet below. Two technical rescue teams and Rescues from Purchase and White Plains were requested. All members worked together to perform a high angle rope rescue for the safe removal of the patient. Purchase units cleared at 9:30 PM.
August 10, 10:42 PM - Car 2411, Car 2412, Engine 240, and Rescue 30 operated with the West Harrison and Armonk Fire Departments at the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident with one patient pinned on Interstate 684 northbound at mile marker 3.5. Firefighters encountered a small sedan that was crushed between a tree and an SUV. Patient access and disentanglement was difficult to achieve due to the position of the vehicle. Crews used multiple rescue tools and techniques to remove the patient. Units cleared at 1:49 AM.
August 28-29 - As Hurricane Irene gained momentum, agencies in the Town of Harrison met to prepare for the incoming storm. Police, fire, and EMS agencies worked together to coordinate resources before the storm struck. About twenty firefighters stood by in the firehouse for the duration of the storm to staff the apparatus. Units responded to multiple calls including flooding, downed wires, automatic fire alarms, and a reported structure fire with the West Harrison Fire Department that had been extinguished upon arrival. |
